For our first edition we managed to get our wonderful teacher Robin to stop
dancing for a while and give us an interview. Robin lives in Stevenage and works
for a translation company as a production co-ordinator. She is a Libra, (one
of many in the crew), and she has also trained as a teacher.
How when and where did you start Cerocing?
In Bedford in April 1994. I was interested in finding a dance class after a
friend threw me into a few moves at a summer ball. I eventually found the class
in Bedford which at the time was the only venue in the area.
You also teach in Cambridge. What made you decide to become a teacher?
I had the honour of being asked by Ceroc Central empire builder Phil Roberts
if I would teach for him.
Tell us a bit about the process of training and qualifying as a Ceroc teacher?
It is very intensive. You have an interview and then a beginners course,
two intermediate courses plus two advanced course. Then you have an annual update
of all the new moves. It's hard work but great fun.
What was your first teaching night like?
My first lesson was in Letchworth. I was sooo nervous! But it was
great having lots of support from familiar faces. My second lesson was more
nerve racking as it was in Bedford in front of Phil Roberts and the franchise
manager for Ceroc UK.
What is involved with running a franchise?
Hard work, enthusiasm, and having a good team. The ability to work as a
"pack horse" also helps!
How do you remember all the different moves?
I don't. I think that anyone who can freestyle with more than 15 moves
at any one time is a genius. There are over 400 moves so I try a variety to
teach. My "CEROC bible" is a weighty tome that I refer to for inspiration, but
it is not the sort of thing that would fit easily into a handbag. (Ed - I'll
show you a woman with one that it will fit into!!)
What's your favourite move and your favourite Ceroc dance track?
It changes with the seasons! At the moment I have a penchant for the catapult
hook spinning top. For the dance tracks I like the classics like "Fever", "Bamboo
Bamboogie" and other 90s dance tracks that get my toes a tapping.
What type of music do you like?
Most types to listen to. Classical is a treat when I'm not dancing which
is not very often! I'm not big on heavy metal though.
What are your favourite groups and what hobbies do you have?
I like female artists like Sheryl Crow, Sarah MacClachan and groups like
M People, and Garbage. Cheery Poppin Daddies are cool. Hobbies I enjoy are badminton
and walking.
How do you relax?
Being with friends. Watching "Frasier" and "Eddie Izzard" videos.
Any style tips for beginners?
Ladies, don't be like me! Follow the mans lead!! Don't forget that all
important hand hold, nice and relaxed, but best of all smile and enjoy it.
