The Modern Jive Championships

While everyone in the country was enjoying the uncharacteristic Bank holiday weather, 14 Cerocers hopped on a coach at the Forum with the intention of spending 12 hours inside a dark subterranean night club! Mind you, if you do have to be in a night-club then why not go for the biggest and best - The Empire, Leicester Square

On arrival, queuing seemed to be the introductory entertainment as we had our bags searched. Any food or drink that we had inadvertently stuffed into our bags was removed (although hiding food inside your shoes seemed to work Avril) The heats and categories followed thick and fast. Freestyle slots were sprinkled liberally throughout the afternoon, so that there were plenty of opportunities to get out there and "boogie".

The comperes - Mike Ellard and Roy Osubagu-Power were witty and encouraging - Roy’s lurid silver shirt and jacket did much to emphasise the theme of fun rather than serious competition.

In the Lucky Dip category, Malcolm Kearney got through to the third round and Norman Osborne, a regular at Cambridge and Hatfield, was into the quarter finals. The highlight though was Julie Hodgkinson - who has just started demonstrating at Hatfield - she and her partner Alex won the category! Alex and Julie had never danced together before so it really was a lucky dip - Congratulations Julie!

In the Intermediate Freestyle trophy particular mention should go to Lady Phyl and Mel - who danced together. Mel makes an excellent male dancer, and grabbed the attention of the visiting Anglia TV film crew who wanted to interview them after one of the rounds - fame at last...

The advanced Freestyle had a prize of a trip to New York and was hotly contested by some excellent dancers. Congratulations go to Bill Yvanovich and Eric John who, with their partners, made it through to the semi finals and final respectively.

Huge congratulations to Norman Osborne & Julie York in the Beginners category. They were fabulous - a winning combination of natural talent and help from those Stepchecks and CEROCSHOPS. They cut a stylish figure on the dance floor and were duly rewarded with their second place. They were denied the winners trophy by the most unusual couple - a rather shapely man resplendent in a black dress and high heels and a girl with hat, jacket, trousers and pencilled on moustache.

In the Cabaret items brave couples performed alone on the dance floor. 3 couples won the category. The Pink Panther, & The Rocky Horror Show couples & the incredibly energetic and technically difficult dance performed by Des & Karen - teacher and partner from St Albans. The team Cabaret items were hugely entertaining. You couldn’t forget Emma Day’s tribute to the Spice Girls from Ceroc Central, and also "Double Trouble" who were Victor, Mick & Lydia, all dancing together.

The atmosphere was terrific, everyone was enjoying themselves, & it was a huge success. The cost of the day was the only grumble but what everyone is now asking is "when’s the next one?" Book Early - it will have to be a full size coach next time!
