Whose Crew! This Issue : DAVE EVANS

In this issue we speak to Dave Evans who is one of our male taxi dancers. David lives in Ware and works in Hertford and Ipswich for BT as a Business Manager within their Advanced Communications Engineering division. He is a Sagittarius who is dreading the year 2000 because he will again have a zero at the end of his age. He tries to drive a Nissan 200SX (not very well at times it seems). (Ed:- his words not mine!) David has 2 daughters, Nicola (16) & Samantha (13). In his spare time he likes DIY & Art (pencil drawing)

How when and where did you start Cerocing?
Two and a half years ago in Bedford. A work colleague dragged me along against my better judgement. 3 hours later I found out that I only had one and a half left feet which was quite a surprise. I’ve been hooked ever since.

How often do you go to CEROC and to what venues?
2-3 times a week. Hatfield on Tuesdays, Harlow on Wednesdays, (where I sometimes taxi), and St. Albans on Thursdays. I normally do the odd specials like Tea Dances, weekend events and busks. It’s the only exercise I get (Ed:- that’s not what we’ve heard!) so I like to go as often as I can.

What made you decide to be a taxi dancer and why do you do it?
Robin asked me. With Hatfield being closer to me than the other venues, I want to help make it a success. Now we are at the new place I think its turning into a great venue with more people coming and the quality of dancing is improving all the time, which is good for all of us. Mike also told me about the heavy drinking, gambling, and vice that are rife among the crew. How could I refuse?

How do you remember the moves?
What, are there set moves? I’ve just been doing my own thing! No, honestly, it’s hard sometimes and lots of practice seems to be the only way. If you like a move, keep using it until you can remember it and it works for you. I often forget some of the moves, but then suddenly remember and give it a go. If it doesn’t work, try again later.

Do you have a favourite move?
Yes. I’m very partial to the full Windmill because it’s a difficult move to get the timing right. I also like the right hand wrap in -walk through (don’t know the real name). I used to like the man spin, but the last time I tried it I ended up hitting another car, so I’ve gone off that one!

What are your favourite Ceroc dance tracks?
It keeps changing all the time. I like Van Morrisons’ “Precious Time” at the moment. But it usually depends on my mood and how much energy I’ve got.

What type of music do you like?
Just about everything except Country and Rap

And your favourite groups?
Jethro Tull, Van Morrison, Lynard Skinnard, Lighthouse Family plus lots more.

What other hobbies do you have?
I sometimes get the chance to play golf, but not enough. My latest interest is alternative newsletter publication, but getting my own back on Mike gives me the greatest joy. I also do some charity work and I’m a Director of the Management Company that runs my housing development.

How do you relax?
I can’t when Mike’s about. At other times, its by dancing or listening to music, with a full bodied Aussie (Red Wine that is – although the other would help as well). (Ed:- so any particular man in mind then?)

You and Bryan have this fetish for dancing the woman's part. He reckons you’ll never be as good a woman as him. Any comments?
If he want’s to get good at washing up, ironing, cleaning, cooking and water retention, then that’s up to him. Anyway my bum’s more shapely than his!!!

In true crew traditions, you have a reputation for holding wild parties, overflowing with debauchery and alcohol, at your flat. Would you like to comment on this?
Not until I’ve spoken to my solicitor.

Any ambitions?
To keep all my own hair (iffy) and to get away with this interview without being heavily edited & mis-quoted by the Ed. I don’t think the last one is realistic though. (Ed:- tee hee!!)

Any advice for beginners?
Keep it simple and practice the moves till you get them right. It’s best to get the basics right and in time to the music before trying to move onto the fancy stuff. Doing exactly what the Teacher says helps a lot – so put your hands and feet where you’ve been told. Men – make positive signs and be firm. Ladies – relax and follow. Have fun.
