Bad weather on a Bank Holiday Sunday is not everyone’s dream, but the sun was shining for the Hatfield dancers whilst they spent 12 hours indoors at the Ceroc Championships. Hammersmith Palais got the thumbs up as the venue for this year’s event, offering more space and better facilities for the 1,500 people than The Leicester Square Empire did last year.
The standard of dancing was definitely higher than last year with much more effort made with the creation & the removal of costumes! You could be forgiven for thinking that you were at a “Full Monty” performance with the ripping of Velcro & the sparkly spandex which adorned the men.
The dancing was excellent in all the categories; it was fantastic to witness people from Hatfield, Letchworth and Cambridge all competing well in the Beginners category. The Intermediate category had so many couples with such a high standard that judging was difficult. Congratulations to Pat and Gina for their fabulous dancing and their original costumes – go for it again next year. Eric John, a former demonstrator at Hatfield and Carol Clarke, both regulars at our Tea Dances, got massive support for their entry in the Advanced category. They were rewarded with second place. Carol was also one third of the Double Trouble entry partnering Bill and Robin. All three looked slick and dapper in tails and bow ties and with the support from the crowd, got through to the top three. The winner was Joseph Sewell, the teacher for Hatfield’s initial Double Trouble workshops.
The showcase couples displayed a wide range of dance styles, but the highlight of the day were the Team Cabarets. The Austin Powers entry from Sheffield was a crowd pleaser, along with Derek Harnden and his partner’s performance in the Lucky Dip category. Derek’s partner had only been dancing a few months but showed how infectious & fun dancing could be! Hopefully the Championships will go from strength to strength with even more participation from our Hatfield crowd next year!
